Hello OELP 2011!

The first day of the new semester is fast approaching, and I hope you're getting excited...I can't wait! On the first day of classes, you'll be receiving the full course package, including all course outlines, attendance and behaviour expectations, major Geography assignments / rubrics, and a calendar outlining the tentative dates for all OELP trips this year. It's going to be a busy start to what I know will be an action-packed semester.

Some of you have inquired about the dates of trips so that you can begin to plan with your employment schedule, family events, etc, so I have decided to attach a calendar to this blog to answer some of your questions.

Look to the right of this blog entry to find a file called:

"OELP_Calendar_2011_tentative"

Open it up, and print it off!

If you have any questions, save them for the first day, or come on up to the OELP room and I'll try to answer as best I can. Be forewarned: this is just a TENTATIVE calendar, and as such, the dates may change.

The first day of the new semester is here! WELCOME to all new OELP students!!! The opportunity is here; it's up to you to make it the experience of a lifetime. Just a few reminders:

Come prepared tomorrow afternoon (Thursday) and Friday to get out into the great outdoors. This includes weather-appropriate layers, coat, snow pants, winter boots, hat and mittens/gloves. Basically, dress like you're going out to run around in the snow. Hooray!
All students are expected to have a JOURNAL by Monday, February 8th, and sooner if possible.
Please be sure to get all FORMS signed and returned no later than Friday, February 12th. The form for Brock University needs to be in earlier, by Monday, February 8th.
Your COURSE DEPOSIT is due by Friday, February 12th. See Ms. Brooks if you have concerns or would like to get information on available bursaries.

One more thing - tomorrow, to prove you've completed your homework and familiarized yourself with this blog, you will need this "password" to be admitted to class (without embarassment):

OELP and SHSM students start Duke of Ed!

As of December 1st, all Environmental Specialist High Skills Major and OELP students have been enrolled in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Program. The aims of the Award Program are to encourage and stimulate:

self-reliance and self-discipline,
perseverance and determination,
initiative and creativity,
community involvement and social responsibility,
value orientation and value-oriented decision making,
the spirit of adventure,
fitness of body and mind,
vocational, cultural and family life skills, and
interational understanding and awareness.

This program is recognized in many countries around the world, and by many post-secondary institutions.
Students will first be working toward their Bronze Award, which is one of the seven certifications in the SHSM program. The Bronze Award includes many components of OELP:

Service (15 hours over 6 months)
Adventurous Journal (practice and qualifying overnight trip)
Skill (development of a skill over 6 months)
Physical Recreation (30 hours over 15 weeks)

It's just a few short months until OELP 2010 begins, and already it looks like we're going to have quite the season! This blog has been created to give you access to some of the files you need in order to remain organized in the course. Files will be uploaded in order, with the most current files listed at the top of the column to the right of this blog. Currently, there are four different files you can check out...

OELP Calendar - This is a tentative calendar to give you an idea of what kinds of trips we may be taking throughout the semester; keep in mind that these dates/trips may change.
